A couple years ago while remodeling our home I designed and built this concrete sink and wood table. The idea of not having a mirror to look into was an experiment to bring one into the present. It eliminates the idea that the self is externally composed; removing the image of self allowing one to truly be in many senses of the word. We can be present without the pull of expectation, and remove any other illusory demands upon self. What is it that we really need to be? So many illusions are placed in front of us: TV, movies, magazines, phones, and then we are left with a mirror for reflection. I’d say all these including the mirror are illusions we feed into. To truly be ones self one must feel from within the happenings if their environment. To do this is to become one with your surroundings rather than separate from them.

Villa Vals

Architects CMA and SeARCH were focusing on the question if it would be possible to conceal a house in an Alpine slope while still exploiting the wonderful views and allowing light to enter the building when planing the Villa Vals. They decided to build a central patio into the steep incline to create a large facade with considerable potential for window openings. The viewing angle from the building is slightly inclined, giving a dramatic view of the beautiful mountains on the opposite side of the narrow valley.
